Co-learning with experts and the community
Our webinars are a popular series of interactive conversations where we invite experts, professionals and the community to share their insights about key environmental topics, trends and research. In doing so, we hope to provoke reflections and spark collective action.
From Conflict to Coexistence: Our Interactions with Wildlife around us
Held in conjunction with Nparks’ SustainableFest 2022, the webinar discussed reasons why human-wildlife conflicts occur and how can we reimagine a society that allows for human-wildlife coexistence, given Singapore’s vision to develop into a City In Nature as part of the adaptation strategy against future climate risks and impacts.
Fashion X Sustainability: Production, Innovation, Consumption
With experts in the fashion industry, the webinar uncovered the life cycle of garments from raw materials to the clothes stocked on product shelves and the environmental impacts of excessive fashion production and consumption. Furthermore, discussions also touched upon exciting sustainable innovations within the industry and ways consumers can make a difference with what we wear.
Graduating into the Green Workforce
With an increasing number of graduates keen to explore a sustainability-related career, this webinar provided insights to guide undergraduates on how they may best position themselves, academically and in co-curricular terms, to stand out to prospective employers in the sustainability and environment-related sector.
Planting the Seeds of Our Future:
Trends in Urban and Community Farming
In conjunction with NParks SustainabilityFest 2021, this webinar discussed the issue of food security and how we can better utilise our limited urban space, with the engagement of local communities, to enhance Singapore’s food self-sufficiency and limit potential threats from the climate crisis and supply chain uncertainty to our food supply.
Shades of Green: Valuing and
Protecting Singapore’s Green Spaces
This webinar featured the perspectives of an ecologist, economist, and an architect in the dilemma surrounding the development of green spaces, which recognises the positives of conserving forests, nature reserves for the health and well-being of Singaporeans but also the real needs for urban infrastructure. The speakers further challenged us to consider if all green spaces are of similar values and if creative designs can be applied to better integrate nature in our urban green landscape.
Micro Forests: An Oasis of Nature and Biodiversity in Our Neighbourhoods
This masterclass webinar by Dr Chong Kwek Yan, introduces the micro forest concept, which are miniature forests that can be nested within the urban environment such as within the nieghbourhoods of a land-scarce Singapore. One way to do this is by using the "Miyawaki method", which allows for the creation of micro forests that are more biodiverse and absorb more carbon within a shorter time than conventional forests.
Rethinking Resources: Closing the
Loop on Singapore’s Circular Economy
In this webinar, we discussed the need to close the resource life cycle loop to minimise the impact on the environment while recognising the challenges on building a circular economy in Singapore and beyond. However, with our strengths in technology, science and finance, Singapore may be an enabler to drive and promote greater circularity in the global economy.
Covid-19: The Circuit Breaker of Unsustainable Practices
Our first webinar was held on 30 May 2020 and explored how COVID-19 has put a pause on our usual routines, which has allowed nature to thrive in some areas again. The unusual circumstances also forced us to rethink the sustainability of our lifestyles, career pathways and business models.
